Extinct Creatures?
I'm not sure if this has come up anywhere yet, but what should we do with extinct creatures? Are they fair game to use in this set, or maybe should we hold off, create a fully functioning set of cards with currently existing creatures, then maybe in the future release an expansion pack of extinct creatures? (think Pokemon: Fossil expansion)
Thoughts?

Yes, Phylo(mon) should include extinct critters. Otherwise, how can we do cool stuff like "Tyrannosaurus Rex vs African Elephant"? And quite apart from the 'cool' factor, we are tryna get and hold kids' interest, right?rageofanath wrote:I'm not sure if this has come up anywhere yet, but what should we do with extinct creatures? How many kids don't love dinosaurs?
It would be foolish and highly counterproductive to leave dinos out of the game. The only question is when to release the first dinosaur card, because there's an awful bloody lot of critters and plants and yada yada yada to choose from...

I'm game overall to release extinct organisms as well. Might work well if there's an evolution type gameplay developed. That way, we can link things up via classification, etc.

I'd definitely say go with get a functioning base set THEN add extinct animals as a special expansion.
As much as kids like dinosaurs, they already get plenty of PR and are relatively well loved and understood by kids. They don't know much about ducks and pine trees, who don't exactly get big budget shows. You aren't like to see Walking with Ducks turn up on Discovery channel.
Deal with the core issue first (learn about real live animals!) then build upon the base.

Yeah, when I was a kid, I was all about dinosaurs... so much so that Paleontology is my second passion next to Marine Biology.
Dinosaurs and extinct animals are cool and all... but I'd much rather work with and study something that's alive today.
I'm still all for having extinct animals as part of Phylo though.

Re: Extinct Creatures?
So I have an idea for the extinct cards. In general, I think the project will generally get some Internet interest when the site is launched. This will probably make it primed for a wave of submissions, etc. Having a future step where an "announcement" is made for "extinct" organisms is exactly the kind of hook that can generate another "buzz" wave.
Related to this, we can have other waves down the road. Basically an interesting way to generate continued interest in the project (ie I was thinking if hosting a competition later to get an image for "homo sapiens" for instance).
Anyway, in this regard I don't think there's any problem with folks starting submit artwork for "extinct" categories. Might actually give us some fodder for designing things to go along with the "extinct" launch.

I don't see why an "extinct" animal couldn't be played as if it were still alive today as long as it didn't go extinct millions of years ago and is a more recent one.
Re: Extinct Creatures?
I think we should deffinitely include extinct animals. I would so build a dinosaur deck. Also human ancestors would be cool to include. I want australopithicenes darn it!

Heads up: a dinosaur deck is looking like something that will be a reality. I'm going to start a new thread in case there are folks who want to help out.

I and my class are working on designing some extinct creatures. We're starting off with a Origin of Life/Archean Life deck and moving forward in time with decks for key periods in life and earth evolution. I am hoping to put out one a semester, but we will see how it goes.

So, are we getting dinosaur deck already? I want some non-fish extinct marine-life.
